evening addition

Went to see Dame Kiri Te Kanawa this evening. God it was beautiful. The concert with the symphony (VSO) tonight seemed to realign all the wayward rampant energy in my body and I felt so mellow, and calm and relaxed at the end of the show.

I got back to thinking about all the strange things that humans do, the physical expressions we use, which to an alien might seem completely bizarre and random.

Clapping, for one thing. We smack our hands together to make noise in appreciation for something. It's about the same as whacking two pieces of steak together. The same randomness. Just that they are parts of our body that use both movement and sound to make an expression. It's just odd when you think about it, really think about it. It's primitive.

Kissing is another. We press our mouths together, taste each other, lick, smell. It's wet, and it feels lovely because our lips are so sensitive. But really really think about the action, the physical action itself. It's strange, isn't it? We PRESS OUR MOUTHS TOGETHER. Why not another body part? Why the mouth in particular? Is it because it's a particularly intimate part of our body?

It's not that I am arguing with any of these things we do, it's just that I want you to stop and really think about the little things we do as humans, instead of doing them by rote, automatically, like we seem to do. We are animals, and we've evolved with these behaviours and they mean so much to other humans, but to other creatures these things are completely random and weird.

Anyway, on that deep note, I was frivolous once again and bought some oddly coloured eye shadows today, for fun. Here's me after the show tonight, mucking about in the bathroom.
